USA Boxing Hosts a Successful Training Camp with the Junior and Elite Champions at the OTC

Over 40 national champions in the junior and elite men’s and women’s divisions participated in a successful training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The elite men arrived in the Pikes Peak region on April 16 and the remainder of the athletes traveled to Colorado Springs on April 21. USA Boxing International Teaching Coach Pedro Roque led the athletes through a wide variety of training techniques and instructive sessions with the assistance of the following coaches:  Michael Newson (Las Vegas, Nev.), Edward Rivas (Abilene, Texas), Willie Moses (Newark, N.J.), Omar Sanchez (Parlier, Calif.), Kevin Benford (Cincinnati, Ohio), Benny Roman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Eugene Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.). In addition, several of the athletes’ personal coaches traveled to Colorado Springs to participate in the major camp, which was the first of its kind.

Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) took part in the training camp as well, traveling to Colorado Springs to spar with the elite champions and lend her expertise to all of the athletes. Coach Roque chose to have the athletes all train together, providing a special team atmosphere for everyone from the youngest Junior Olympian on up to Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas). In addition to a second ring being added to the boxing gym, the athletes trained on the basketball courts as well as numerous outdoor venues to accommodate the large number of boxers.

The USOC Sports Sciences division added a new element to the training camp as well with the introduction of new technological devices. The world-class technology consisted of small, wearable, and wireless motion sensors that measure how quick, reactive, and fit the boxers are, and what determines an Olympic athlete. The USOC will be using this technology to provide coaches with objective and scientific data that cannot be captured by the naked eye, and consequently they will be able to use this information and optimize the training of the boxers.

The junior females closed camp first, prior to heading to Finland for the Pirkka Tournament where they won five gold and one silver medal and Caitlin Orosco was named the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament.

The remaining camp participants enjoyed a team outing to the movie theater to watch 1996 Olympic bronze medalist Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s victory over Robert Guerrero on the big screen. The junior and elite men will depart Colorado Springs today with the younger athletes traveling overseas to Uman, Ukraine for the Victory Day Tournament. The elite men will head home for just under two weeks before traveling to Puerto Rico for the Cheo Aponte Tournament.

The elite women’s training camp will continue through May 12 when they head south to Venezuela for the Continental Championships.

Congratulations to the junior girls for their strong showing in Finland and good luck to all of the remaining athletes who will represent Team USA in international competition over the next few weeks.

Official Olympic Film - FIRST

USA Boxing’s own Queen Underwood is featured in the official Olympic film - FIRST: The Story of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  The 2012 Olympian is one of 12 athletes chosen before the London Games to be highlighted in the film. She is joined by fellow female boxer Katie Taylor and is one of only three American athletes in the movie, which will be shown one night only in select theaters on May 30.

Directed by Caroline Rowland, this documentary gives audiences unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to some of the greatest moments of the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the six weeks she spent with the athletes leading up to the London Games, Rowland filmed 60 hours of footage featuring the athletes, their families, coaches and friends and had unique access to film hundreds of hours of coverage of the events at London 2012.
